Giving Thanks

Sometimes when I sit down to stamp, I start out with a pretty good idea of what I want to do, whether it's a stamp set I want to use or a vision of what I want a card to look like.  And then there's days when I sit down and have no clue where to start.  That's kind-of what happened today... When it happens, I always turn to my old friend Pinterest.  I was browsing fall ideas and I came upon a pretty watercolor card with just a single leaf on it.  I really liked the way the colors were blended, both on the leaf and in the background.  That idea led to the focal point of this card, which turned out really pretty, I think!  Then it was just a matter of playing with layouts to find what I liked best!  And here is the final result!

Tips & Tricks

  • I started this card by embossing the leaf on to watercolor paper using a VersaMark pad and copper embossing powder.  Once the leaf was done, I used washi tape along the edges to resist the color I was going to wash on to the paper.  When your project is dry, the washi tape can be carefully removed to leave a crisp, uncolored edge on the paper.
  • To create the flecks on the leaf paper, I squeezed a small amount of water from my aqua paper into the lid of my Early Espresso ink pad.  I then picked up color on to the tip of my aqua painter and splattered it over my project.
  • Because linen thread is so thin, I like the affect I get when I wrap it around a project several times like I did at the top of this piece.  I like to spread the strands out, then run my adhesive over the back to keep them in place.
  • I can't say enough good things about the Stitched Shapes framelits!!  If you don't have them yet, be sure you add them to your won't be sorry!  I'm always really happy with the little "stitched" touch they add, and I'm finding that I don't need another layer behind this piece to help it stand out...I love my Stitched Shapes!!
